About La Puente

The bridge of 1769

La Puente, Los Angeles County

La Puente means the bridge, a name that goes back to 1769, when soldiers of the Portola expedition built a crossing over a muddy creek here. John Rowland and William Workman received the surrounding rancho in the 1840s. Walnuts later became the main crop, and local boosters claimed their packing house was the biggest anywhere. The city incorporated in 1956.
